Fast Fact

A salmon can detect one drop of water from its home stream mixed up in 250 gallons of sea water. Salmon will follow this faint scent trail back to their home stream to spawn. The lateral line along the salmon's side can detect very small currents in the water. This helps them tell direction, find food, and avoid predators. Some Sockeye salmon are able to navigate using the sun and moon. Salmon have 300 degree vision. They can see in all directions except directly behind them.

The Prince William Sound is one of its most rugged, beautiful, and bountiful places on Earth. It represents the true meaning of the Last Frontier and is a prominent jewel in Alaska’s crown. Home to Stellar Sea lions, rafts of otters, pods of majestic Humpback Whales, the famed Copper River Salmon, Bald Eagles and more, the Sound is a place where nature reigns supreme.

The Prince William Sound Science Center plays an important central role in understanding the interactions between all of the facets of the ecosystem, so that this and future generations can continue to appreciate and benefit from all the Sound has to offer. Through our partnerships with dozens of organizations, we have been developing an ever-more accurate picture of the Sound since 1987.
