Accommodations

During our overnight programs that take place in Cordova, participants stay at our semi-permanent field camp located near 25 mile on the Copper River Highway. There are two weather ports with wooden floors and cots for sleeping, a kitchen yurt equipped for cooking, a yurt for dining and indoor activities, and 2 portable outhouses. There is no running water at our site, but we transport water for cooking and washing dishes, teeth and hands! We have a fire ring and open area for games and other fun activities while we are at camp.

During the Copper River rafting portions of our adult Natural History of the Copper River Watershed programs, participants will sleep in tents provided by Alaska River Expeditions.

Because the Copper River Delta is home to both black and brown bears, we enforce strict bear safety policies and procedures at camp and in the field. All program participants will receive a bear safety orientation upon arrival to camp, and are expected to follow safety procedures at all times. A copy of our Bear Policy is available upon request.

Staff

We are dedicated to educating children and adults about the intricate natural world around them. Using an experiential, hands-on approach, we teach ecological principles and scientific methods of understanding and solving environmental problems. We aim to raise awareness of the importance of wise resource use and a shared respect for the land on which all humans depend.
Science Camp instructors and counselors include educators and scientists from the Prince William Sound Science Center and the U.S. Forest Service, Cordova Ranger District. With a ratio of 4:1, each individual is sure to receive highly personalized, caring instruction. Instructors are college educated with backgrounds in a variety of educational settings, and bring a variety of life experiences, knowledge and passions to the program.

All staff have, at a minimum, CPR and First-aid certifications. A staff member holding current certification as a Wilderness First Responder serves as the program health contact assisting program participants with any health care needs while at camp.

Other trainings our staff must complete include defensive driving, bear spray use training, firearm safety and range certification.

Oceanography of the Prince William Sound and Natural History of the Copper River Watershed will be led by regional scientists and experts in the field of study.

Employment: Please click here for more information about employment opportunities with the Prince William Sound Science Center.
