The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council recently funded a four-year research program aimed at better understanding the reasons that herring have not returned to Prince William Sound. The program includes ten projects that examine different aspects of the life of juvenile herring, from predation to disease to starvation. The goals of the program are to determine the location of juvenile rearing bays, monitor conditions that may limit herring recruitment, and establish protocols for long-term sampling. This presentation provides a brief introduction to the various projects and how they are tied together to achieve their goals.
